I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU ALL, BUT THE PICTURE ABOVE IS ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL DEPICTIONS I've ever seen about the multitudes of at least TWO MILLION who came out of Egypt and ultimately passed through the parted sea. How can we know the approximate number of people? Because Exodus 12 gives us a clue by giving us the exact number of MEN only.
Exodus 12:37 The people of Isra'el traveled from Ra'amses to Sukkot, some six hundred thousand men on foot, not counting children. 38 A mixed crowd also went up with them, as well as livestock in large numbers, both flocks and herds. (CJB)
Now, add to that the wives and children AND the “mixed crowd that had followed Moshe out of Egypt, and all you can do is guess that they numbered at least around two million.
What’s more, such a huge number of people (along with their flocks and herds) could NOT possibly have traveled across the many miles to the sea and then crossed the sea in a short amount of time!
Why? Well, consider this:
Let's say the 2 million traveled, five families abreast, and that they could all walk briskly, 3 miles an hour. (Four miles per hour is a VERY fast pace, considerably faster than a normal walking speed, so 3 miles per hour is a more reasonable, yet "brisk" pace to use in this estimate.)
Further, let's say the families are clustered together, rows of families 10 feet apart. This means, we have a line, 5 families wide; 120,000 families long, which stretches 227 miles!
Please take some time to ponder this mind-blowing feat on the very first "Pass-Over," to grasp the enormity of what YHWH accomplished through Moshe and Aharon to liberate His people after 430 years of captivity...
