A close look at Matthew 4, where Yeshua is tempted by the Adversary…

Let’s take a close look at Matthew 4, where Yeshua is tempted by the Adversary – and be sure to note how he never became angry, defensive or or belligerent; he simply kept calmly quoting Torah!

And so did the Adversary! … which reveals he knows YHWH’s Word, as well. (That's how he was able to deceive Eve in the Garden!) The Adversary loves to TWIST the Word. That is why it is SO important to be constantly vigilant, as there are many “adversaries” among us, seeking to devour the gullible!

Okay, so let's do our little study:

Matthew 4:1 Then the Spirit led Yeshua up into the wilderness to be tempted by the Adversary. 2 After Yeshua had fasted forty days and nights, he was hungry. 3 The Tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, order these stones to become bread.” 4 But he answered, “The Tanakhsays, ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of Adonai’”

NOTE: See Deuteronomy 8:3. Yeshua declares that he himself, along with all of mankind, is required to live by the “Words” of YHWH, and that the Commandments Yeshua teaches are in fact YHWH’s Commandments from Torah.

However, Greek/English translators inserted the title Kurios/Lord, for both YHWH and Y’shua, rather than using original Names. Christian theologians then began teaching the fallacy that their “New Testaments” were the “new” Word, or new “Commandments of Yeshua” that replaced the original Word of YHWH, which is Torah. See John 8:36 (47); 12:48-50; 13:34; 14:10-21; 1 John 2:3-8; 2 John 1:5,6.

CONTINUATION OF MATTHEW 4:

Matthew 4:5 Then the Adversary took him to the holy city and set him on the highest point of the Temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “jump! For the Tanakh says, ‘He will order his angels to be responsible for you. . . . They will support you with their hands, so that you will not hurt your feet on the stones.’”

NOTE: See Psalm 91:11–12.

Matthew 4: 7 Yeshua replied to him, “But it also says, ‘Do not put Adonai your God to the test.’”

NOTE: See Deuteronomy 6:16.

Matthew 4: 8 Once more, the Adversary took him up to the summit of a very high mountain, showed him all the kingdoms of the world in all their glory, 9 and said to him, “All this I will give you if you will bow down and worship me.” 10 “Away with you, Satan!” Yeshua told him, “For the Tanakh says, ‘Worship Adonai your God, and serve only him.’”

NOTE: See Deuteronomy 6:13–14.

Matthew 4: 11 Then the Adversary let him alone, and angels came and took care of him. 12 When Yeshua heard that Yochanan had been put in prison, he returned to the Galil; 13 but he left Natzeret and came to live in K’far-Nachum, a lake shore town near the boundary between Z’vulun and Naftali. 14 This happened in order to fulfill what Yesha‘yahu the prophet had said,

15 “Land of Z’vulun and land of Naftali, toward the lake, beyond the Yarden, Galil-of-the-Goyim — 16 the people living in darkness have seen a great light; upon those living in the region, in the shadow of death, light has dawned.”

NOTE: See Isaiah 8:23(9:1)–9:1(2). Now, please pay special attention to the following passage because it reveals the FIRST of many times Yeshua said he came to proclaim NOT the “good news” of himself; rather, the Kingdom of Heaven – which is all about YHWH and being reconciled to HIM.

It’s NEVER been about “Jesus came to bring grace, abolish the law and die for us, so we could be forgiven for everything we do” (which is NOT true, by the way!)….

CONTINUATION OF MATTHEW 4:

Matthew 4: 17 From that time on, Yeshua began proclaiming, “Turn from your sins to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near!”

18 As Yeshua walked by Lake Kinneret, he saw two brothers who were fishermen — Shim‘on, known as Kefa, and his brother Andrew — throwing their net into the lake. 19 Yeshua said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers for men!” 20 At once they left their nets and went with him.

21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers — Ya’akov Ben-Zavdai and Yochanan his brother — in the boat with their father Zavdai, repairing their nets; and he called them. 22 At once they left the boat and their father and went with Yeshua.

QUESTION: Obviously, there was "something special," clearly visible, about Yeshua, or else people would NOT simply have dropped everything to follow him! What do YOU think it might have been? His demeanor or appearance? The way he spoke? What?

CONTINUATION OF MATTHEW 4:

(Notice as you continue reading that, for the second time in this chapter, Yeshua is once again proclaiming NOT “himself” but the KINGDOM!)

Matthew 4: 23 Yeshua went all over the Galil teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the Good News of the Kingdom, and healing people from every kind of disease and sickness.

24 Word of him spread throughout all Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill, suffering from various diseases and pains, and those held in the power of demons, and epileptics and paralytics; and he healed them. 25 Huge crowds followed him from the Galil, the Ten Towns, Yerushalayim, Y’hudah, and ‘Ever-HaYarden. (CJB)

So, Yeshua proclaims from the very beginning that his role was to “proclaim the Kingdom of YHWH” (Luke 4:43), and NOT bring “grace” or any “get-out-of-jail-free” card! The Kingdom of YHWH requires our obedience to YHWH, to live holy lives for Him, and to be worthy of the redemption YHWH offered us through Yeshua, His redeeming Messiah.

  1. This is an awesome teaching. So interesting how Y'shua was taken into the Wilderness to be tested/ tempted; Isra'el was led into the Wilderness to be tested. So many are aloof of the Malchut elohim; many have been duped into the: "grace, grace.." or that "jesus came to die for my sins and I and my sins are covered in his blood. Hmmm Well, as you stated so eloquently it's not ALL about just jesus. It's about the seeking First the Kingdom of God. Yeshua gives us a great illustration of how to overcome the powers and principalities through the use of the WORD of elohim. I especially love the prophetic revelation spoken by Yeshayahu that is found in Matthew 4:15 (WOW). I am so over joyed in this teaching. I find it profound that so many anti-missionaries or those unlearned of the "LAW" which is YHWH's Torahh cannot see how..." on the two commandments hang Torah AND The prophets." Awesome!!! Keep teaching. There are students in the seats and attentively learning. Shalom

  2. The word GRACE ... as I understand ...means .. "unmerited Favour " we are all unworthy of Y H W H' S Mercy and Grace .. I think they go together . What the Sunday Evangelicals have made it into a doctrine of "Once saved .. always saved " just believe repent and that's it folks .. Eternal life .. NO NO NO We have to REPENT ... and OBEY our FATHER Y H W H ' S TORAH.... and Follow our YESHUA'S life as HE lived ... showing us how to live in OBEDIENCE and preaching of the Coming Kingdom Of Y H W H ... HIS GRACE , MERCY. LOVE and HIS RUACH within us ..... Grace is NOT a get-out-of-jail- free card . I agree Carmen .. we have to live a HOLY set-apart life .. and then Receive HIS Grace , Mercy , to be worthy of the Redemption Y H W H offered us through YESHUA ... the Messiah
